Again, it is fire season in Colorado. Years after the death of the beetle have left the area about the size of Rhode Island, standing dead pines twisted in Colorado.
Property owners are ultimately responsible to protect themselves and their property against the threat of forest fires. The two best methods of protecting property is the construction of a perimeter defense around structures and building structures with building materials fire resistant.
According to Colorado State University, his first defense against wildfire is to create and maintain defensible space around your home. This does not mean that the landscape must be sterile. Defensible space is an area around a structure where fuels and vegetation are treated, cleared or reduced to slow the spread of forest fires to or from the home and allows firefighters to the area to do their job.
No construction materials are completely "fireproof." However, there are building materials that are highly resistant to fire. Roof of a house is especially susceptible to wildfires, as is usually the most exposed surface area of the house. Building materials are classified as Class C, resistance to fire, Class A, the most fire resistant.
Mineral reinforced asphalt shingles have Class C fire resistance rating of the International Building Code. The only benefit of mineral reinforced asphalt shingles is that they are cheap. However, as with asphalt shingles lifecycle costs are considered, including longevity, among other factors, the tiles are not the least expensive to own.
Metal roofing is lighter than roofing with asphalt shingles, and fuel resistant. It also has a life cycle cost less compared to all roofing materials for the analysis carried out by and presented by Ducker. Metal roofing is Class A building code per capita, however, not all metal roofs are the same.
Controlled trials were conducted using the methodology of fire resistance code to compare the fire resistance between the roofing materials. The test results show a great difference in the resistance to fire 30 gauge steel tiles that resistance to fire and steel 24 gauge is more resistant to fire by a factor of three. Common gauge Roof 30 includes exposed fastening systems such as corrugated boards and agricultural products.
Ceilings standing seam metal is steel, copper, zinc, aluminum and other metals. The standing seam metal roof panels are manufactured in continuous lengths, cut to cover the distance between the crest and forward, seamless cross. Standing seam metal roofs are considered maintenance free, unlike the exposed bra metal roofs that require maintenance.
